Building Regs M and BS8300 state that corduroy stairway tactiles (not to be confused with the blister finish you get at pavements at crossings) should be installed as a hazard warning surface on the top and bottom approaches of the staircase, which will warn the stairway user that they are approaching a staircase. The regulatory documents give details of the dimensions for these approach stairway tactile areas.

Stairway tactiles can be used both internally and externally. Technically they are not mandatory; evidence of this is common in the market as so many installations would not meet the criteria outlined above. However, best practice now states they should only be fitted in external locations as they can lead to a trip hazard internally. Plus as there wasn’t consistency

Quantum Flooring offer a complete range of stairway tactiles to find out more call the office on 0161 627 4222 or click here.
